Description An understanding of fundamental concepts in the design and implementation of computer systems is essential to the development of computer scientists, particularly where they will operate in scientific and professional environments. This module provides students with an introduction to computer systems design, focusing on fundamental concepts in computer architecture, and the contexts in which computer systems are commonly deployed, covering legal, social, ethical and professional issues relevant to computing professionals. Students will also gain a range of technical skills in the design and implementation of electronic circuits and systems-level computer programs.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • Discuss hardware organisation and architecture of computer systems and their components, including logic components, microprocessors and I/O systems
