Description The course aims to introduce the central issues and policies in relation to processes of urbanization and urban development in the south. In particular it aims to: 1. Address the nature of urban growth and development in the south 2. Outline the dimensions of urban poverty 3. Analyse the range of policy options available to confront urban poverty 4. Critically assess the above range of options and the role of international agencies and national governments
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to: 1. Identify and sritically analyse the main soio-economic changes that cause urban growth in the development world 2. Develop a good understanding of the the impact of urban growth and change upon the societies of developing world and awareness of the condition of uban poverty and the range of possible policy options, 3. Develop a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different policy options to address urban poverty, a critical understanding of the role of policy in urban poverty reduction and an ability to judge between different policies in different context

02877-02 : UPD : Coursework (60%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions One 2000 word essay, worth 40% (covering the first four sessions of the module) and one 3000 word essay, worth 60% (covering the remaining six sessions of the module).
