Description
This module is designed to introduce the basic principles of health economics and equip students with the basic knowledge needed to interpret and appraise applied studies in health economics. It covers a range of issues, which can be followed up in greater detail in assignments and option modules. The course covers issues including health and health care systems, methods of economic evaluation, setting priorities using health economics and the interface between health economics and health policy
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:demonstrate a knowledge of the roles and limitations of markets and incentives in health systems; distinguish between the different forms of economic evaluation and show an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches; critically review published economic evaluations of health technologies; demonstrate an understanding of the techniques used to measure both costs and benefits in the evaluation of health care.
1) Unseen multiple-choice examination lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. The examination forms 40% of the total weighting for the module 2) One essay of maximum 2000 words. This assignment forms 60% of the total weighting for the module. A minimum mark of 40% in each assessment is necessary to obtain credits for this module. If one mark is below 40% then the module mark will be capped at 49%.
Reassessment: Opportunity to retake assignment or examination (capped at a mark of 50%) – if combined mark is below 50%, only the assessment(s) with the mark scoring below 50% need be repeated.
