Description The purpose of the module is to introduce students to the key debates and controversies concerning training and development and its relationship to economic competitiveness and organisational performance. They will develop a thorough understanding of the role of the state, the organisation and a number of key stakeholders in managing and influencing skill development. In addition, they will develop an awareness of how the practice of training and development relates to broader strategies for Human Resource Management.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand and explain debates on training, skill formation and competitiveness.
  • Understand the comparative political economy of skill formation.
  • Understand, analyse and critically evaluate government policy and legal regulation and how these shape and impact on organisational and HR strategies and practices
  • Have a critical appreciation of the relationship between training, new forms of work organisation and lifelong learning in theory and in practice through case study examples.
  • Understand the difference between the prescriptive literature and research-based analysis of the role of the state, the organisation and individuals in training and development.
  • Understand theories of learning as they relate to the workplace and their relationship to assessment and evaluation.
