Description
The module aims to introduce students to the gender dimensions of development theory, policy and practice. Students will learn how to use feminist theories to analyse contemporary processes of capitalist development. They will analyse how gender issues permeate all aspects of development policy and will learn how to critically assess these policies. The course also aims to enable students to apply these theoretical and analytical tools to a gendered analysis of contemporary development practices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Understand why and how feminist theories are relevant to the study of development
Distinguish between different feminist theoretical approaches to development and identify which they believe to be most relevant
Develop a critical analysis of the gendered nature of development policy
Understand gender issues in contemporary development
Critically evaluate the gender dimensions of development in practice
