Description

The module objective is to introduce students to core papers and econometric procedures used in empirical research in (positive) accounting and corporate finance. Sessions will typically involve a mix of lectures and classes focusing on the core papers and econometric issues in specific subject areas with each class being accompanied by 'hands on' exercises. Training sessions on various databases will also be included. The emphasis of this module is on empirical implementation and self-learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the key quantitative methods used in empirical research in accounting and finance.
  • Select appropriate statistical and econometric techniques for specific accounting and finance applications.
  • Use statistical packages to conduct empirical analysis.
  • Present and critically interpret the empirical results.
  • Use a range of quantitative methods to conduct their own empirical research in accounting and finance.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal communication and presentation skills by making group presentations.
  • Demonstrate written communication, problem solving, numeracy, and computer literacy skills by completing summative assignments.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Main & Re-assessment: 2,500 word individual assignment (50%) & 2 hour exam (50%) students only resit the failed component
