Description	This module explores how different axes of social difference (gender, age, ethnicity, religion, caste and class) combining in different ways through intersectionality, affect poverty, inequality and development, positively as well as negatively. It also explores different approaches to participation in project and policy development, as well as the livelihoods approach to development, and the importance of social movements in terms of reducing poverty and inequality
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module the student should be able to: Understand the importance and role of participation in contemporary development policy and practice. Articulate and critique a number of social analysis frameworks. Understand the importance and role of participation in contemporary development policy and practice. Critically analyse a number of key social axes of difference and differentiate their roles in poverty and development; Critically apply social analysis approaches to programme and policy development and implementation.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions	Assessments: One x 2,000 word critical reflection worth 40%; One x 3,000 word essay worth 60%. Reassessment: resubmission of failed component.
