Description This module will focus on contemporary issues in work, employment and people management in order to enhance students' understanding of some of the key drivers and challenges shaping the management of human resources. The content will examine areas such as governance, corporate social responsibility, labour market regulation and HRM in private equity firms and the knowledge economy. Each individual session will be led by a different member of the group or guest speaker at the forefront of the issue examined in the respective session.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • understand, analyse and critically evaluate how organisational and HR strategies are shaped by and developed in response to internal and external environmental factors;
  • understand, analyse and critically evaluate the market and competitive environments of organisations and how organisational leaders and the HR function respond to them;
  • understand, analyse and critically evaluate how globalisation and international forces shape and impact on organisational and HR strategies and practices;
  • understand, analyse and critically evaluate government policy and legal regulation and how these shape and impact on organisational and HR strategies and practices, together with ER;
  • assess the implications of the issues examined in the module for contemporary HRM practice;
  • critically evaluate different perspectives and approaches to managing these issues;
  • understand and critically evaluate the role of context in shaping these perspectives and approaches;
  • advance appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
