This module is an opportunity to examine different academic and practice approaches to this topic. We explore the research that underpins theories in use, and encourage you to come to your own well-informed conclusions about the contribution that leadership development activities, programmes and events make to people and organizations. We approach the topic in two key ways:
By engaging with relevant ideas and theories in the area through reading and thinking about published academic research;
By carefully examining how leadership development happens in organizations and to individuals, through education, training, and personal development practices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically analyse the stated aims and objectives of leadership development for individuals and in organizations, and how these work out in practice;
Assess the contribution made by leadership development to different types of organization and organizational purpose;
Explain and critically analyse the concept of leadership and its application in a range of organisational, social, and cultural contexts as a developmental aim;
Produce an original analysis of leadership development theory and practise through close reading of an account of it in an auto/biography.
