Description The aim of this module is to develop a thorough understanding of and the ability to apply appropriate principles in accounting for transactions and events using International Financial Reporting Standards. The module also covers the preparation and construction of final financial statements for both an individual company and groups, including relevant disclosure notes. Coverage of the key differences between International and UK Accounting Standards is also provided.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Apply generally accepted accounting principles
  • Recommend the appropriate accounting treatment under International Financial Reporting Standards to account for specific transactions
  • Prepare journal entries, with supporting calculations, to record a range of transactions in accordance with any relevant guidance on accounting treatment
  • Compare International Financial Reporting Standards and UK Standards in the context of convergence
  • Advise on how certain issues may be dealt with under UK Accounting Standards
  • Construct primary financial statements for an individual company
  • Construct primary financial statements for a Group
  • Construct appropriate disclosures for inclusion within the annual report and accounts
  • Explain the accounting requirements relating to small and medium-sized entities
  • Prepare accurate solutions, in an appropriate format, to accounting issues presented
  • Advise, with reference to the accounting standards, on the most appropriate accounting treatment for a given situation
  • Appraise a given situation identifying what matters require to be accounted for and/or corrected
  • Prepare financial statements that contain sufficient information and disclosures to satisfy regulatory requirements specific to the size and nature of an entity
  • Advise on suggested practise with reference to regulatory requirements, and recommending alternatives where available
  • Research accounting matters with reference to International Financial Reporting Standards
  • Advise on key current developments within the accounting profession that may have implications for a given situation
  • Apply recognition and measurement principles to specific financial statement items to prepare financial statements
