Description The module deals with private equity and venture finance from inception of the idea, milestone planning, to the harvesting (exiting) of the investment. The first half of the module deals with new venture financing, the roles of the venture capitalist and the differences between entrepreneurial and ‘traditional’ corporate finance. The second half covers methods of the valuation of new ventures and alternative ways to harvest equity investments. In particular, we deal with the initial public offerings (IPO) process and financial performance of venture-backed- companies.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically appraise venture capital funding and how it differs from other kinds of finance.
  • Identify and critically evaluate the structure of and trends in venture capital and private equity investment around the world.
  • Identify the agency relationships involved in venture capital funding and evaluate how contracts help to resolve the agency problems.
  • Analyse the reasons why venture capital investment is staged and often syndicated.
  • Identify and critically evaluate the factors determining the exit strategy of a venture capitalised firm
  • Apply various valuation techniques in venture capital and private equity settings.
  • Evaluate short and long term performance of venture capital-backed companies.
