Description
This module aims to give students critical knowledge and understanding of finance theories and the key issues in corporate financial management. Among other things, the module will cover the objectives of financial management, time value of money, investment appraisal techniques under certainty and uncertainty, risk and return, portfolio theory, types of finance and sources of finance that firms use, weighted average cost of capital, capital structure decision, dividend decision and working capital management. The module will lay some backgrounds which will be further developed at a later stage of the degree programme.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
use a range of techniques to appraise project investment proposals and know the strengths and weaknesses of each technique;
assess the potential impact of using different types of finance, or sources of finance, on the weighted average cost of capital and market value of a firm. They should also have a critical knowledge and understanding of the capital structure literature;
assess the potential impact of dividend policies of firms on their market values. They should also have a critical knowledge and understanding of the dividend policy literature;
apply a range of working capital management techniques; and
apply portfolio theory and have a critical awareness of its strengths and limitations.

Main assessment: Continuous assessment (20%), Group report 5,000 words (30%) & 2 hour exam (50%). Re-assessment: MCQ (20%), 1,500 word individual assignment (30%) & 2 hour exam (50%). Students only re-take the failed component
