Description The aim of this module is to provide a solid practical, conceptual and analytical understanding of entrepreneurial start-ups. Although no prior understanding is assumed, lectures and small group teaching activities mix key practical business start-up skills with a theoretical understanding of entrepreneurial start-ups. The module covers these key areas:
  • Risk and uncertainty in the entrepreneurial environment
  • Characteristics of new start ups
  • Nascent entrepreneurship: theory and practice
  • Entrepreneurial characteristics and capacities
  • Opportunity recognition: developing creative competencies/idea generation
  • Opportunity evaluation: The role of business planning
  • Assembling and configuring start up resources
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the environment of the entrepreneur and the small business;
  • Understand the different theoretical approaches and models that underlie entrepreneurial processes and outcomes and be able to critically evaluate such theories;
  • Undertake a feasibility study, integrating a conceptual awareness of important business knowledge, skills and abilities in functional areas (e.g. marketing, operations, finance);
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of the importance of opportunity recognition and evaluation processes involved in creating and developing business opportunities;
  • Demonstrate skills in verbal and written communication, team working, and critical analysis;
  • Use IT both to research and apply secondary sources of market research, and to undertake primary research.
Assessment 28309-01 : 2 Hour Examination : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (70%)
28309-02 : Group Assignment : Coursework (30%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments:

Group Assignment: Group crowdfunding campaign and feasibility study to include a 3 minute group video about the business and a group feasibility report of 2000 words. – 30%

Examination (2 Hours) – 70%

Reassessment: Examination (2 Hours) – 100%

These assessment methods will be contextualised to meet the individual needs of the module.
