Description This module explores the complexity involved in managing contemporary organisations. We will consider the relationship between managers and other stakeholder groups, particularly employees. Traditional and more recent academic theories, which aim to understand and predict these relationships, will be analysed, as will the different contextual and situational factors which influence management decision making on a daily basis. Case studies are used to develop students' confidence in their ability to be involved in activities leading to successful management.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically assess the reasons for organisational success and failure and understand the need for continuous improvement
  • Understand, analyse and critically evaluate the market and competitive environments of organisations and how managers and the HR function respond to them
  • Critically evaluate how organisational behaviour drives performance and competitiveness
  • Critically assess the role and value of enlightened corporate social responsibility
  • Interpret financial information, manage financial resources and draw realistic and appropriate conclusions and make recommendations based on costed options
  • Make sound and justifiable decisions and solve problems more effectively
