This compulsory module provides the opportunity to carry out independent research work over a period of two semesters into a topic or question that interests you and which will normally be related to your programme of studies. The module is student-centred and you are required to work under your own initiative. However, each student is assigned an academic supervisor who will support and guide you in this process.
You may present your dissertation either as a literature review/long essay, or you may decide that you want to conduct some original empirical research. Either of these is acceptable, however your approach must be justified and if you choose to do primary research you must show that the methodology you choose is appropriate to your research question.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
undertake independent, though supervised, research in an area of interest to them;
show a degree of initiative in collecting and analysing material;
present a well written cogently and critically argued dissertation.
