Description The purpose of the module is to introduce students to social science research methods, with particular reference to the formulation of international development policy, emphasising the necessity of an evidence based focus. They will then put these research skills into practice.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Critically analyse the role of social science research in development policy and action;
  • Employ the principles of research design;
  • Recognise how to choose and how to apply appropriate methods to meet particular research objectives;
  • Design and apply selected research methods in development policy contexts;
  • Undertake a substantial piece of independent research;
  • Present a coherent, well-argued and convincing research document, following appropriate conventions for adademic writing and referencing.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments: Completion of a Research Proposal (15% of total); Submission of a 10-12,000 word dissertation (85% of total) Reassessment: Re-submission of Dissertation
