Description Principles of Responsible Business will cover: ‘Responsible Capitalism’, Business Ethics, Corporate Governance and Regulation, and Sustainability etc and their implications for business responsibilities to customers, employees (pay, pensions, training, working conditions and rights), shareholders, depositors and savers, other stakeholders and indeed society as a whole, the ‘general public’ and the ‘public good’. In sum, it will consider the overarching question of what sort of ‘social contract’ is required between business and government (on behalf of ‘the people’). Opportunities will be sought for engagement with the business community through visiting speakers.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • critically evaluate current debates relating to the role of business in society, at micro, meso and macro levels of analysis;
  • analyse employment and consumer relations, immigration, sustainability and inequality, as aspects of business responsibility;
  • relate theory to practice through the notion of praxis;
  • critically reflect on their own rights and responsibilities in relation to the intersection of business and responsibility.

31675-02 : Case Study Assessmernt : Coursework (75%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Main assessment: Group presentation & report (25%) & 1,500 word timed case study (75%).
Re-assessment: 2,000 word individual assignment (100%)
