Description The focus in this module is on developing the critical thinking and practical skills necessary for undergraduate study, possible work placement and graduate careers in the field of business and management. The module introduces students to three key aspects of university learning:
1. Critical thinking
2. Reflection and reflexivity
3. Skills, such as the efficient use of the library and bibliographic sources, including online databases; the importance of good referencing; the dangers of plagiarism as well as the principles of good essay writing – especially how to structure an essay and organize material - specifically focusing on producing a balanced argument in the form of a literature review. The module will emphasize the importance of synopsis, paraphrasing and critical appraisal.
The assessment on the module is novel and reflects these three aims. The first component assigns students a partner who will assess the literature review they write and whose literature review they will assess in turn. The grade assigned by their peer will comprise 30 per cent of the module grade, while the feedback they provide to their peer will be assessed by teaching staff, for 20 per cent of the module grade. This process will encourage students to think about what they write from perspective of both learner and assessor, and through assessing the work of others they reflect on what constitutes a good piece of work. Students will also write a reflective assignment on the idea and practice of critical thinking that comprises the remaining 50 per cent of the module grade.
Learning Outcomes by the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • Define critical thinking and practice critique of the academic work of others and selves
  • Engage in independent academic study to produce a basic literature review
  • Prepare and carry out effective research and data collection from various academic sources.
