Description This module aims to teach students corporate finance in a broad sense. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part, the students taking this course should expect to learn the nature and workings of financial markets and their use by corporations, investors and others. They will acquire some skills in modern valuation techniques, including the pricing of fixed-income securities, equities and derivatives. They will learn about the principles of finance, financial statement analysis, including arbitrage, market efficiency, asset pricing models and portfolio theory.

In the second part, students will be exposed to The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) is a regulatory framework for alternative investment fund managers (AIFMs), including hedge funds, private equity funds, and real estate funds. The module will then introduce MiFID to the students elaborating on the key impacts of changes to market structure regulation. Throughout, this course spends a significant amount of time on practical applications of theories introduced along with their role in promoting ethical and sustainable businesses, financial systems and economies.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically apply discounted cash flow technique
  • Critically interpret and analyse financial statements
  • Critically evaluate and determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of various asset and option pricing models and be able to apply the models to value assets, using data obtained from Birmingham Business School’s Trading Room that have access to Bloomberg, WRDS, ORBIS Bankfocus, COMPUSTAT, CRSP, Datastream, etc.
  • Demonstrate critical knowledge of market efficiency, capital structure, dividend policy, risk management, regulatory provisions, transparency and the role of disclosure (for AIFMs and MiFIDs), etc., on the market prices of assets
  • Examine and estimate overall cost of capital and assess the potential impacts of the use of different types of capital and/or raising capital from different sources, on the overall cost of capital and market value of a company
  • Critically evaluate the importance of ethics and responsible business to companies.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Main & Reassessment: 2,000 word individual case study (50%) & 2 hour exam (50%).
