Description The Dissertation module consists of a two-stage process. At the first stage, all students on this module will have to take Research Methods in Finance lectures in the second semester. This will be the commencement of the dissertation process. These lectures will guide students to pursue academic readings, conduct literature reviews, develop research ideas with testable hypothesis, understand broad suites of methodologies available for data analysis, familiarise themselves with the available data sources and data collection procedures, highlight related ethical issues, and understand the process of dissertation writing. At the end of second semester, students are required to submit a thorough research proposal for their dissertation. At the second stage, over the summer term, they will work with their assigned supervisors to develop their research proposal to a full dissertation.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Assess and critically review the literature relevant to an area of academic research
  • Review current theoretical and applied research in a finance area, such as corporate finance, investment, asset pricing, banking and financial markets
  • Articulate a convincing motivation for a programme of research on their topic of interest, leading to the development of a research idea with a clear testable hypothesis
  • Collect data from a financial database
  • Critically apply a broad suite of methodologies to analyse data
  • Effectively communicate research findings through their dissertation
