Description Fundamental analysis is a specialist module offering students an opportunity to combine their technical knowledge of financial accounting and finance by developing a conceptual framework for analysing, and ultimately valuing, business operations. The module will equip students with the tools that will enable them to interpret financial statement information and use this to inform the kinds of investment decisions that face managers working in numerous different roles in the private, public, and third sectors. Furthermore, the module will encourage students to engage with academic accounting literature, so as to reflect on the nature of financial statement information and on how this affects various aspects of society. It is assumed that students taking this module have previously studied financial accounting (particular the preparation of financial statements) and finance (particularly the use of net present value techniques) to at least an introductory level.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Interpret an organisation’s financial statement information, so as to analyse the performance of its business operations;
  • Calculate the financial value of a business using a range of valuation models;
  • Critically evaluate financial statement analysis techniques and valuation models;
  • Critically evaluate the role(s) played by financial accounting, financial statements, and valuation in society.
