Description The underlying aim of this module is to use our understanding of economic theory and econometric methods to analyse various aspects of policy as pursued by developing countries. It builds on strong foundations in micro- and macroeconomics to explain both the formulation and the impact of economic development policy. Rigorous empirical analysis will be used, with emphasis placed on identifying the causal impact of policy. Specific policies adopted by developing countries will be analysed, covering a range of micro- and macroeconomic issues, including micro credit policies, antipoverty policies for economic growth and development; public expenditure policies and political economy issues in a global economy. This will allow for both an understanding of which policies have been effective in specific settings, and a broader understanding of the impact of policy on development goals.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically apply economic theory and analysis to issues facing policy-makers in developing countries
  • Evaluate the causal impact of policies that have been implemented in developing economies
  • Assess the success of public expenditure policies and analyse complex political economy issues
  • Critically discuss the complexities of anti-poverty policies
  • Display analytical and creative thinking in applying knowledge of economics to policy settings
