Description The dissertation is the final independent piece of work that students are required to complete to obtain their Master's qualification. The module will equip students with the relevant knowledge and skills required to successfully carry out independent research for their dissertation. The dissertation allows students to research and analyse in depth a particular area of Economics, through a focus on one or more of economic theory, econometric analysis and policy evaluation. Student learning is supported by regular individual supervision sessions, although the expectation is that the dissertation is primarily an individual piece of work. Any student who wishes to qualify with a named specialism in one of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Experimental and Behavioural Economics or Development Economics will need to write on a topic related to the relevant field.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Complete an extensive and independent piece of economic analysis
  • Design and formulate a research proposal and use appropriate methods to pursue the question therein.
  • Critically analyse and apply economic theory, empirical analysis, and/or policy analysis to a field of economics.
  • Critique relevant literature and synthesise theories and empirical findings.
  • Demonstrate research skills, including digital skills, data analysis, synthesis, visualisation and interpretation.
