Description
This module will introduce students to the methodology of experimental research in economics. Students will read some of the seminal experimental economics papers and will be exposed to currently active areas of research in experimental economics. The module will concentrate on a series of experiments, in order to see how experiments build on one another and allow researchers with different theoretical dispositions to narrow the range of potential disagreement. A key aim of this module is to provide students with a solid understanding of the experimental methodology. We will examine several areas of economic analysis in which experiments are applied, likely to include, but not limited to, finance, game theory, public finance and labour economics.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically analyse different experimental designs and methodologies
Formulate experimental designs to test specific hypotheses
Critically analyse and interpret the results of economic experiments
Justify conclusions using methodological and economic arguments with appropriate rigour
Display analytical and creative thinking in applying knowledge of economics to experimental settings
