Description This module provides an in-depth treatment of contemporary issues in development economics. It will balance elements of economic theory, empirical analysis and policy analysis, focussing on methods of analysis that may be applied to problems particular to developing economies. There will be an initial focus on the economics of growth with specific applications to developing countries, analysing different approaches to growth, development and poverty reduction. The module will go on to investigate the relationship between globalisation, development, poverty and inequality. Other topics covered will include education, human capital and endogenous growth; and labour markets, migration and urbanisation. Throughout the module, there will be a focus on the importance of history, institutions and policies for development, and the impact of globalisation on economic development.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Explain and analyse recent developments in economic theory relating to developing economies
  • Use the tools of advanced economic theory to analyse problems particular to developing countries
  • Appraise and synthesise the relevant literature, explaining how theories have been tested and the results obtained
  • Critically apply economic theory and analysis to issues facing policy-makers in developing countries
  • Demonstrate analytical, problem-solving and essay-writing skills
