Description This module outlines major supply chain trends driving the adoption of new technologies in supply chain. These technologies promise to promote efficiency and innovation within supply chain operations to gain and maintain competitive advantages. The module covers some of the most widely adopted advanced technologies in supply chain, for example cloud-based Information Systems; Blockchain; Robots and automation; Drones; and 3D printing. This module equips students with an understanding of the impacts and implications of how different emerging technologies can be constructed and integrated to enhance supply chain performance in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It also enhances students' understanding of the strategies and approaches for developing supply chain innovation (including product, services, process, business model) based on those new technologies. This module enriches the practical skills and knowledge relating to supply chain technology and innovation, in turn enabling students to effectively contribute to their future supply chain-related roles.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically appraise fundamental concepts of information systems in supply chain management.
  • Critically evaluate the role of different emerging advanced technologies to shape and transform the supply chain operations to create and sustain supply chain competitive advantages.
  • Critically assess the opportunities and implications of adopting advanced technologies to enhance supply chain performance and promote supply chain innovation.
  • Critically analyse the challenges and obstacles of adopting new technologies into supply chain operations and innovations.
  • Develop appropriate strategies and approaches of facilitating the implementations of advanced technologies to enhance supply chain operational performance and to foster the supply chain innovation.
