Description
This module is designed to go beyond the first principles of economic evaluation. Its focus will be the development, extension and application of the main issues and techniques fro economic evaluation that were discussed in the introductory module. The material covered by the course includes an in depth coverage of the components of economics evaluations, such as, cost data collection and analysis, outcome data analysis, health state valuation in general and discounting issues. Alternative methods for economic evaluation and the relevant frameworks will be discussed with case studies and policy applications. The module includes a full day's inter-active practical session in which 'hands-on' application and analysis of alternative modelling approaches used in economic evaluation will be demonstrated with full discussion of the advantages and appropriateness of the alternative techniques.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues associated with the appropriate collection and analysis of cost and outcome data
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of discounting issues and the controversy surrounding the appropriate discount rate to use for costs and benefits within an economic evaluation
Critically appraise a number of alternative frameworks and analytical approaches that are used in economic evaluation and understand the appropriate presentation of results
Critically review alternative methods to outcome evaluation and their relevance to alternative evaluation approaches
Recognise the policy implications that may result from economic evaluations.

07860-01 : 2000 word Essay : Coursework (60%)
07860-02 : End of Term Exam : Exam (School Arranged) - Written Unseen (40%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment: This module is assessed by one 2000 word assignment (60% of module mark) and an unseen examination lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. This examination forms 40% of the total weighting for the module.
A minimum mark of 40% in each component is necessary to obtain credits for this module. If one mark is below 40% then module mark will be capped at 49%.
Reassessment: Opportunity to retake assignment and/or online assessment (capped at a mark of 50%) – if combined mark is below 50%, only the assessment with the mark scoring below 50% need be repeated.
