This module is designed to enable you to gain an advanced understanding of key actors and themes in East Asia. It is broadly divided into the two areas of Development and Insecurity. Development refers both to the economic progress of key states, as well as to general issues pertaining to good governance.

 Topics related to these will be illustrated through the study of specific countries. Insecurity relates not only to traditional concerns over high security issues, such as nuclear weapons, but also to critical security issues such as post-conflict reconstruction.

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

• Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the principal state actors and issues affecting the international politics of East Asia
• Assess the key changing roles of the principal actors in shaping the political economy of the region in key areas of investigation
• Demonstrate an advanced ability to utilise primary, secondary and web-based sources in order to assess developments in East Asia
