Description
Students research and write dissertations (of 15,000 words or fewer) on topics which their supervisors agree to be suitable and appropriate to the particular postgraduate programme on which they are enrolled. The initial stages of this process - finding a topic, initial planning of the dissertation etc. - fall under the separate module LM 36144 Research Skills and Methods in Philosophy. The module LM 20212 Dissertation covers the process from initial conception/planning through to submission of the completed work. Students are assisted in this through up to five one-to-one meetings with their supervisors.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to
demonstrate a thorough familiarity and understanding of the area of philosophy covered by the dissertation;
manifest expertise in the philosophical skills required for productive independent research on these topics, such as the ability to find, interpret and analyse difficult (sometimes technical) texts, the ability to construct rigorous arguments concerning these issues, and the ability to analyse and criticise others' arguments.
