This module is designed to introduce students to psychological approaches to human development and interpersonal behaviour in social contexts. The specific focus is on psychology applied to social work and social policy (particularly in relation to social care and health). Lectures and small group sessions will support students to develop understanding of psychology and its relevance for specific purposes. The teaching will introduce students to psychology as a discipline, and core perspectives and methods. Students will be supported to consider human development across the lifespan, covering development in childhood, adolescence, and in younger, middle and older adulthood. Understanding individuals in the context of their life-span, and ability to understand experiences of and social policy framing of normative and non-normative transitions will be central. Students will also engage with social psychology to explore communication and cognition in practice, policy and politics arenas. `Care' and `Control' themes will be addressed through material concerning control concepts, examining social processes, and individual motivations. Addressing issues of diversity and development will be integrated into teaching sessions. At all points teaching is directed towards supporting the use of psychology to think about and understand experiences of care and welfare, and students are encouraged to draw on their own previous learning and experiences to help them evaluate the theories explored in sessions.
