Description The module analyses important global issues from a sociological perspective. It introduces students to globalisation, the emergence of world society, and to the persistence of global inequalities. Among the key topics examined are poverty and development, gender and racial inequalities, demographic change, migration, urbanisation, environmental issues, work and coporate power, tourism and culture, world religions, crime, terrorism, conflict and the media's role in a globalised world.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify and evaluate key analytical issues in debates on globalisation
  • Assess the development of and relationship between processes of cultural, economic and political globalisation
  • Critically apply these debates to substantive case studies in aspects of Global Societies
