Description This is a compulsory module to enhance social work skills and values for practice, including ethical principles, boundaries and mechanisms of accountability and support, respect for diversity, communication skills, and the promotion of service user autonomy. In doing so, it builds on the skills students have gained in their first practice placement and develops these further in preparation for their second (final) practice placement in Year 3. It comprises a mix of academic and experiential learning to equip students to engage with more complex and challenging social situations.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional social work role in a range of contexts and in complex situations, including its ethical principles, boundaries and mechanisms of accountability and support.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to identify and, with guidance, manage potentially conflicting values and ethical dilemmas in complex practice situations, particularly in relation to the care and control functions of the social work role.
  • Be able to demonstrate a range of communication and assessment skills to elicit and respect the needs and views of service users and carers of all ages and abilities and to maximise their participation in decision-making
  • Respect and value the diversity and multiplicity of service user identities and where necessary challenge sources of discrimination and oppression
  • Develop effective partnerships (including in challenging situations) to promote service users' rights to autonomy and self-determination whilst identifying and managing risk
  • Demonstrate skills in recording and sharing information appropriately with service users, colleagues and other agencies
  • Critically reflect on and identify their own learning and support needs and demonstrate an ability to promote their own safety and wellbeing
  • Contribute to the learning and professional development of others.
  • Demonstrate they understand and are working towards Social Work England’s professional standards in readiness for their application for registration.
