Description This 20 credit module provides an introduction to property development processes in urban areas and the roles played by the private and public sector actors. It examines complexities of urban property markets across a range of sectors and the financial considerations behind development decisions.
The starting point for this module is the need for planners in the public and private sectors to have a sound grasp of property development and its commercial underpinnings. The overall aim is to enable students to develop an understanding of the property development process and to develop skills in generating creative solutions to the challenge of achieving viable, sustainable development in urban areas.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the property development sector’s structure, financing and commercial rationale
  • Explain the urban development process and the critical decision-making points that shape the parameters of final site development
  • Undertake a general development site appraisal taking account of a full range of relevant factors and make appropriate recommendations for action on the basis of this
