Description This module will explore theories surrounding new migration and super-diversity in considerable depth paying particular attention to the policies and politics that shape responses to migration at European, national, regional and local levels. It will also challenge students to think critically about migration and the impact upon social policy and the provision of social welfare, and to examine reactions and responses to migration from a range of contrasting perspectives.

This module will enhance the current MA programme. In the current programme issues of new migration are touched upon but not addressed in any depth. Migration is a key policy area and a subject that has attracted considerable academic debate. It is critical that our MA programmes offer module options that reflect both cutting-edge academic debates as well as policy and legislative developments. Without this module we are unlikely to attract new students, particularly students who come to the University of Birmingham, located within one of the most multicultural cities in the UK, to learn about all aspects of Social Policy, including diversity and migration.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the theory, policies and politics underpinning thinking around new migration, super-diversity and social policy.
