Description This module will explore theories surrounding the intersection of migration, citizenship and globalisation. It offers a critical overview of academic scholarship in migration studies paying particular attention to the policies and politics that shape responses to migration at international, EU, national, and local levels. It will challenge students to think critically about migration and the impact upon public policy and to examine reactions and responses to migration from a range of contrasting perspectives.

This module will enrich the offer on the MA in Migration, Superdiversity and Policy providing an advanced module in which to explore in greater depth the intersections of policy, international migration and societal transformation. The MA in Migration currently includes only one migration-related module. In the current programme issues of migration are touched upon but mainly addressed in relation to new migration and within the national context. This module places the relationship between migration and citizenship at its core and explores shifting understanding of belonging in Western liberal democracies as well as in new immigration hubs. It explores the impact of this relationship on ideas of deservingness, entitlement and access to public services and social welfare.

It is critical that our MA in Migration and other MA programmes offer module options that reflect both cutting-edge academic debates as well as policy and legislative developments in this area. Given its global scope, the proposed module will also enhance our MA offer to international students and further enrich the study offer for students who come to the University of Birmingham, located within one of the most multicultural cities in the UK, to learn about all aspects of Social Policy including diversity and migration. It would provide an advanced option on migration issues for the MA in Global Social Policy currently under discussion.

The module is likely to be of interest to students enrolled on programmes in other departments across the University e.g. Sociology, Social Psychology, Planning, History, Law, Politics, Human Geography. The module leader and the Director of the MA have had numerous conversations with key contacts in other departments, particularly those linked to the Institute for Research into Superdiversity. and are currently finalising a list of MA programmes where the course will be offered as a MOMD.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
