Description The module is concerned with understanding the causes, dynamics and consequences of the Arab-Israeli conflict, with focus on diplomacy and the role of third party mediation. The first part of the module will deal with the historical origins and the development of the conflict to the establishment of Israel in 1948. The second part will focus on approaches to conflict resolution and in particular mediation. The final part of the module will examine in detail the role of third parties in the evolution of the conflict and the efforts to resolve it through various forms of third party intervention, from the first armistice agreements to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should:

  • Develop knowledge of the key theoretical questions regarding conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Show an understanding of the key diplomatic and political developments in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
  • Identify and evaluate the contribution of different third parties to the evolution of the conflict; critically assess their records of intervention.
  • Think critically about subject matters; identify and address key issues in the modern political history of the Middle East; use both diplomatic and political histories of the region to construct explanations of key developments.
