Description The module will involve an analysis of the third sector, with a particular focus on social enterprise. Whilst mainly UK focused it will be informed by international comparison.

The analysis of social policy has increasingly paid attention to the mixed economy of welfare with the third sector playing a significant role in welfare provision. Over recent decades this has changed to include the use of social enterprise as another mechanism through which welfare objectives are achieved. This module therefore examines the rise and development of both of these sectors. It explores the claimed benefits and disadvantages as well as the political pressures causing change and adaptation within each sector in relation to political demands.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critique definitional and theoretical debates on the third sector and social enterprise
  • Identify key policy issues and critically assess policy challenges in relation to the third sector and social enterprise
  • Evaluate the role that social entrepreneurship and innovation can play in the alleviation of social problems.
  • Design policy interventions which reflect a practical understanding of how to make use of third sector and social entrepreneurial approaches to help tackle social problems in society.
