This module will give students an insight into the theory and practice of employment law relating to individual rights. Students will be introduced to fundamental employment law topics. Such topics may include: unfair dismissal; discrimination; the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006; parental rights; and Employment Tribunal practice and procedure. Students may be expected to critically assess the current state of employment law and the challenges faced by those who practice it.
The module may also draw upon clinical legal education models to introduce students to professional conduct issues in a simulated practice setting, thereby developing their legal practice skills. Throughout the module students may have a number of opportunities to hear from employment law practitioners and to observe a real Employment Tribunal Hearing.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
synthesise substantive employment law issues and processes and demonstrate their application in a practical context; and
analyse complex factual scenarios and interpret results of independent legal research in order to provide accurate legal advice
formulate and articulate a reasoned opinion on the legal and practical consequences of pursuing potential courses of action in response to an employment law issue.
