Description
Good governance is essential for good public management and delivery of excellent public services. This is set against a backdrop of the state under stress and major public management reforms instigated by government, plus the infusion of other sectors taking an increasing role in the delivery of public services.
The modules will provide participants with (i) grounding in the principles of governance/good governance, (ii) understanding of practices and problems in governance, and (iii) critical and analytical skills which they can apply to real cases. Content includes principles of governance/good governance; the role of the state, civil society and the private sector in governance; the nature of public accountability, forms of democracy and institutional aspects of governance.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand and critically evaluate the theory and practice of public management and governance, with a particular focus on the UK
Critically assess the role of the state in relation to the shape of public policy and public services
Understand and appraise the political and democratic context within which public management and governance operates
Critically assess the challenges for public management and governance, both in the immediate period and in the longer term
Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills in relation to complex public management and governance issues
