Description
This module focuses on the role of government intervention in the economy. The module provides students with an outline of how the market operates to organise economic activity and examines how the market may fail, thus opening the way for government intervention in the economy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an in-depth understating of how the market works to provide spontaneous organisation of economic activity
Critically assess fundamental role of government in providing law and order, enforcement of contracts and national defence
Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the main forms of market failure; including those caused by externalities and public goods, and their implications for public sector intervention
Critically discuss key features of a taxation system and budgeting in the public sector
Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of economics in analysing the operation of the public sector
