Description
This module explores contemporary debates in relation to crime and social harm within criminology and broader areas of the social sciences. Students will be encouraged to consider how we should best define terms such as ‘crime’ and ‘social harm’ to most effectively understand the extent and scale of injury within our societies. The module will be structured around a series of issues, such as violence, environmental harm, punishment, workplace harms, and drug related deaths. Through these topics we will consider whether issues are best framed through a crime or social harm lens and moreover, what policy responses are effectively required to reduce harm, in terms of criminal justice or wider social policy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
Identify and critically evaluate different approaches to defining crime and social harm
To critically evaluate the strength and weaknesses of particular methodological approaches to the study of crime and social harm
To critically evaluate the limits of state power, the law, regulation and specifically the criminal law as a system of regulating and alleviating social harms
To critically evaluate comparative responses to harm and to understand the impacts of these on the experience of particular harms in specific nation states
