This broad module examines in theory and through thematic examples the political economy and security of the Asia Pacific region.
The aim of this module is to provide students with a Masters level knowledge of the contemporary political and security issues in the Asia Pacific region, and with an advanced understanding of the International Relations theories which underpin them. It focuses in particular on the roles of China, Japan, South Korea, the United States and the regional grouping of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
Recognise and demonstrate understanding of the key state-, non-state and extra-regional political and security actors in the Asia-Pacific;
Identify traditional and new actors and issues in relation to Asia-Pacific politics and security;
Analyse key historical and contemporary issues in Asia-Pacific politics and security;
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the ways in which different International Relations theories relate to traditional and non-traditional issues in Asia-Pacific politics and security.
