Description This module focuses on the importance of performance management in public service delivery and achieving strategic objectives. The module introduces students to the main theoretical perspectives that underpin performance and strategic management, and how these have developed and relate to the dynamics of public services delivery. It will also introduce evidence on how both strategy and performance management can also disruptive and challenging to real and effective outcomes. The module will also challenge how performance and strategic management can be effectively applied in complex and collaborative arrangements for public services.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Synthesize performance management with its underpinning for strategic management and policy objectives
  • Appraise performance management in terms of its capability of meeting policy goals
  • Critique performance measurement on both negative and positive consequences for strategic management and organisational impact
  • Critically approach the theoretical perspectives that underpin performance management and strategic objectives
  • Enable students to apply frameworks used within strategic and performance management
  • Recognise and resolve the challenges faced by organisations developing strategic and performance management frameworks within complex public service environments
