Description This module, which is taught throughout in the German language, begins with the study of German legal history and development and an introduction to the sources of German Law. It familiarises the students with key aspects of German Constitutional Law I (Grundgesetz), in particular with the organs of the state and the legal institutions. It equips the students with knowledge about the hierarchy of norms, the court structure and the German legal profession.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key principles of German constitutional law I, in particular with the organs of the state and the legal institutions;
  • Identify and contrast the main differences between the German legal system and the English legal system;
  • Access and present critically German Constitutional Law I legislation, cases and German academic writing;
  • Compose case studies and essays using the German language.
