Description This module provides students with an understanding of how public management operates in different settings. It considers the topic in a number of significant contexts and examines similarities and differences between democratic and non-environments. Theoretically, the module adopts a multi-level perspective. It demonstrates how governing, socio economic and cultural environments influence manifestations of public management and draws on case studies in different policy areas, considering factors which drive reform; a particular emphasis is placed on contemporary drivers. The first half of the module will introduce key perspectives and comparative method and identify cases; the second will utilise comparative method to examine policy.

This module is designed with formative group work and student collaboration as explicit foci, in terms of class work and assessment.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of how governing, socio economic and cultural contexts affect manifestations of public management.
  • Demonstrate comparative analysis skills and confidently analyse public management in a comparative context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the structure and functioning of any given political-management system contrasts with that of others.
