Description This module will consider the evolution and role of the European Union as an actor in international and global politics. The curriculum will cover the historical context, conceptual debates and theoretical approaches surrounding the EU’s foreign policy role and identity, the institutional and governance arrangements of EU foreign policy, the EU’s relations with other key foreign policy actors and organisations, and the content and projection of key European Union foreign policies. This is a specialist module designed to develop critical awareness of Europe’s place in the world and to enhance understanding of the European contribution to the major international and global debates such as conflict prevention and mediation, crisis management, the global economy, decolonisation and development, the environment, human rights and civil liberties, social justice, equality, and immigration.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of:
  • The conceptual and theoretical debates surrounding the foreign policy evolution and role of the European Union.
  • The institutional and governance arrangements of European Union foreign policy.
  • The European Union’s relations with other key international actors and organisations.
  • The content and projection of key European Union foreign policies.
