Description This module explores, from intersectional and decolonial perspectives, the rapid urban growth that the world has experienced in the last 100 years and the diverse outcomes of this on people, families and communities. Using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework it will explore issues such as urban health, climate, migration, social justice, differing forms of governance as well as critically engaging with globalisation. All of these issues will be considered in the context of sustainability, both in the sense of current problems, how these can be mitigated and future scenario planning. The module uses cities from both the global north and south as case studies and, in the case of the latter, will explore the role of international organisations in urban contexts such as the use of ‘aid’, the role of ‘experts’ and trade agreements/legislation. Dubai will provide further case studies with academic led field trips undertaken to numerous sites in the city.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • evaluate the current research, both academic and policy, on a range of sustainability issues that impact upon urban areas in a range of contexts
  • be aware of the complex interplay between local, national and international governments/organisations on urban development in both the global north and south
  • discuss the power relations that exist within cities that impact on its inhabitants in relation to the SDGS and to begin to be able to use an intersectional approach in their reflections
  • through synthesising academic and policy literature, case study data and field observations to be able to suggest appropriate mitigation policy responses to selected SDGs
  • understand, and articulate, their own positionalities in relation to urban issues
