Description
This module critically explores the key challenges that rapidly expanding urban areas face in trying to create healthy cities for all. It begins by exploring some of the key challenges cities face in this area, for example, around atmospheric pollution, water quality/access, obesity, ageing, disability and child friendly spaces, and how responses to these differ according to socio-political contexts. The module then moves on to explore ‘best practice’ in these areas and students are challenged to explore these in case study examples, using field experiences and policy reviews. Key within the module are reflections on how to ensure that healthy initiatives are inclusive for all and how diverse ranges of communities can be involved in their planning. The module also considers how cities can meaningfully include planning for healthy lifestyles within their plans for post-carbon futures. Dubai is used extensively as a laboratory for the module with numerous site visits and community engagement. The module is assessed via a government style report that examines in depth the challenges the city faces in enabling health lifestyles and, reflecting on the community engagement, which then proposes innovative solutions.
Learning Outcomes
