Description This module focuses on the changes in managing public services as new ICT and knowledge management practices are adopted across public services.

The module introduces students to the main theoretical perspectives on information management as it is applied within the public sector. Students analyse how ICT has been adopted and relate to the dynamics of the management and governance of public services. The module includes research on international perspectives about information management within public services, and the increasing importance of digital and social media within public organisations.

Students critically review developments in the gathering, processing and dissemination of data through computer systems. They also examine the managerial and organisational issues associated with ICTs and the emerging e-governance agenda.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Clarify the flows of different types of information within organisations and identify their importance;
  • Define and design management information systems at a conceptual level;
  • Understand well the relevance and impact of digital technologies on public sector management;
  • Identify the main change drivers associated with digital technology within public organisations and analyse their impact;
  • Critically analyse the key concepts of the 'information age' and 'E-governance'; Discuss in depth the impact of new technologies on patterns of work, service delivery and client interaction within the public sector.
