This module will provide an introduction to the legal system of the UAE and relevant GCC countries.
This module will provide students with: (1) understanding of the UAE and GCC legal system, (2) the necessary legal skills to navigate through the UAE and GCC legal system, and (3) the skill on how to apply the relevant law in accordance with the structure of the UAE and GCC legal system. It will address the methodology of reading UAE legislations, courts decisions and government decisions. It may therefore cover areas such as: The constitution and sources of law in the UAE; The legislative procedures of GCC; Main domestic sources of UAE law and how international sources apply in UAE law; The structure of UAE courts and hierarchy of courts and the legal status of courts decisions; The role of quasi-legal authorities in UAE, such as rent committees; The role of offshore and onshore courts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Identify key legal institutions, actors and processes of law making in the UAE and GCC countries;
Develop key legal and study skills including academic writing, critical analysis, reasoning and legal research.
